VentureLabs Associate

John Round joined Flagship Ventures in 2012 as an Associate within Flagship VentureLabs┬«, after completing the VentureLabs Fellows program.  At Flagship, John works with VentureLabs partners as part of a venture creation team, exploring innovative ideas and opportunities, and developing critical scientific and business components that will lead to the firm’s next breakthrough startups.  Before joining Flagship, John was living in Hyderabad, India pursuing biofuel research and commercialization efforts through the U.S. Fulbright Program in conjunction with the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology and Reliance Life Sciences.  In Hyderabad, John explored antimicrobial and biopesticidal applications for jatropha, a large shrub, the seed of which has been the source of much debate regarding its potential as a feedstock for biodiesel.  He also spent time examining the Indian healthcare system as it applies to cancer care, developing an understanding of what technologies would be practical to implement with restricted resources.  Previously, John spent three years at Biogen Idec in biologics process development and clinical scale drug manufacturing, helping to push many promising cancer and multiple sclerosis drug candidates through to commercialization.

He holds an MBA and an M.S. in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh’s dual degree graduate program and a B.S. in bioengineering from Northwestern University.
